Command Line C++ Development

Join session

Mathew Benson

On Day 2 at 14:30 (CET/Berlin) in Track D online

This talk will be a look at the current landscape of developing C++ without an IDE by taking a look at the tools, and in particular command line tools like compilers, linkers, etc. which are the backbones of the Integrated Development Environments(IDEs) that are the main way many people get to interact with the C++ language.

Why would you want to bother with such "ancient" technology in 2025, the age of AI? What are the pros and cons? Let's take a practical look with demos to explore some of the possibilities.

Many people, especially younger developers(and some older ones) first come into contact with development from the perspective of graphical tools and interfaces. I hope to create an appreciation of the inner workings of the Idea -> Code -> Program pathway to increase awareness of what is possible as well as to offer a guide on when to and when not to use some tools and techniques.
