The Meeting C++ mentoring program
This is something new, and right now under construction
Welcome to the Meeting C++ mentoring program. Please read also the mentoring page, this page is the landing page for the group. The program is exclusive to those that have purchased a ticket for the mentoring for the month. The mentoring aims more for junior programmers then seniors.
The mentoring group
Twice a week the group of mentees meets online for one to two hours to discuss the current questions with your Mentor Jens Weller. As part of this group Meeting C++ offers some 1:1 mentoring slots where you'll be able to focus in a 2 hour session each week to improve your C++ skills.
Some of your questions will be shared with the community online, so that the program has access to the general wisdom of the C++ community. As no one knows all of C++ this will help you understand more the nuances of Modern C++ and the different opinions on its application.
1:1 Mentoring
In the 1:1 sessions we will be able to focus on your specific current focus in C++ and provide guidance in your personal learning path. At the beginning you should register your interest for this in the ticketshop, Meeting C++ will then contact you to discuss the details.
What you should know
You should be familiar with the basics of C++ and/or C. My focus is on teaching you Modern C++ and related topics. Once you've registered your interest in the mentoring program we can discuss the details.
Time slots
The group will meet on Monday afternoon and Thursday late afternoon for one hour. 1:1 Mentoring slots are offered on Tuesday and/or Thursday at 10:00 AM CET and 14:00 CET. Some of these time slots may move on behalf of the group or mentee.
My role as your mentor
As a C++ programmer I have many years of experience in important libraries such as Qt, boost and the standard library. I've also worked with dlib, wxWidgets, OpenCV and other libraries. For many years I have worked as a freelancer in C++, seeing lots of code bases and different styles. Organizing Meeting C++ since 2012 has given me insights in modern C++ and its development in the last decade. I'm know C++11 - C++17 well, and have started applying C++20 and C++23 where it fits.
My part in the program is to guide your C++ journey and answer your questions, and see what additional resources could be helpful to you. Over time this will build a knowledge base which is available to the mentees.
As mentor I can help you with my knowledge and understanding of Modern C++, Qt and various C++ libraries. I'm strong with C++11 - C++17, and happy to explore C++20 and beyond with you. For Qt I do not know or use QML, but could be a topic to be explored with a dedicated group.
Your questions will become part of the knowledge base together with my answer, the mentoring group will be able to add comments and further questions to an item in the knowledge base.
What I don't know
My goal with this program is to share C++ knowledge, so naturally build systems are out of scope. While I do have experience under Windows, I'm not a windows dev, so I naturally can help you with cross platform related issues, but not with specific things in the WinAPI and other APIs.
The first mentoring program starts in December
Meeting C++ offers a first and smaller version of the program in 2024 for the first and third week of December with reduced prices for the startup. Register your interest for the 1:1 mentoring or get a ticket for the general mentoring group.
The mentoring program in January 2025 and beyond
Meeting C++ will start with the mentoring program in 2025 for the second and third week of January. For the following months it will go from the first to the third week.
